| Sarah Sidman, Lighting Designer | ||
| Sarah Sidman (Lighting Designer) designs throughout the US and internationally for theater, opera, dance, magic and circus. On London’s West End, she designed the lighting for Stephen Adly Guirgis’ Jesus Hopped the ‘A’ Train, directed by Philip Seymour Hoffman. She also designed the show’s London premiere at the Donmar Warehouse and the Fringe First Award-winning Edinburgh production. Regional US credits include multiple premieres with San Francisco’s Magic Theatre as well as projects with Philadelphia’s Wilma Theater, the Dallas Theater Center, Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey, and CrossRoads Theater Company. With a focus on designing new plays, her Off Broadway credits include original productions with the Public Theater, Manhattan Theater Club, New York Theater Workshop, Women’s Project, New Georges, Foundry, and multiple premieres with LAByrinth Theater Company. Design highlights include new works by Stephen Adly Guirgis, John Patrick Shanley, Luis Alfaro, Will Power, Denis Johnson, Rinne Groff, and Eisa Davis. Her designs for Spanish language musicals have been produced in multiple venues in the US and Puerto Rico, and include La Barberia, Celia, “The Life and Music of Celia Cruz" and Quién Mató a Héctor Lavoe? Additional Spanish language work includes the acclaimed Puerto Rican production of the historical drama Mariana O El Alba. Selected touring work includes: Pig Iron Theater Company’s Hell Meets Henry Halfway, Will Power’s Flow (Sydney Opera House, Australia and Children’s Theater Company, Minneapolis), and River Arts Repertory’s The Road Home: Stories of Children of War (Moscow’s Taganka Theater, The Hague’s Rembrandt Hall in The Netherlands, and New York’s Asia Society). From 1997-2000, she served as Lighting Designer for the Big Apple Circus. Since 2000, she has been the Lighting Designer for the Hip-Hop Theater Festival in NY, San Francisco, Chicago and Washington DC, at venues such as the Public Theater, Yerba Buena, the Chicago Museum of Contemporary Art, and the Kennedy Center. Opera credits include the Dominican Republic’s National Theater productions of Rigoletto, The Barber of Seville, and Aida. Productions were awarded the Cassandra Prize for Best Production of the Year in 1999 and 2001. Additional opera credits include the IberoAmerican Arts Festival’s 2007 premiere of Macias at the Centro de Bellas Artes in Puerto Rico, and the New York premiere of Noa Ain’s original composition Joan of Arc. In addition to her design work, Ms. Sidman works as a Lighting Consultant for theatrical lighting system upgrades. New York clients include the Puerto Rican Traveling Theater and Repertorio Español. In addition, she was the Theatrical Lighting Consultant for the purchase and installation of a comprehensive lighting system for the grand opening of the Ambassador Theater in San Juan, Puerto Rico. She has been a repeat Visiting Artist at Harvard and Fordham Universities. As recipient of the 2006-2007 Clifton Fellowship from Harvard University, she conceived, designed, and implemented a pilot program of Master Classes and Design Labs for undergraduate students. She has been part of the teaching team for LAByrinth’s Master Classes since 2004, and is a repeat Guest Lecturer with New York University’s Theater Arts Program. She is the Associate Lighting Director for Buena Vista Entertainment’s Live with Regis and Kelly. Ms. Sidman is a member of United Scenic Artists. |
